The Toronto Environmental Alliance partnered with Environmental Defence Canada and Environment Hamilton to develop community-led Good Neighbour Campaigns (GNCs) in three Ontario communities over three years.
These campaigns are based on the successful GNC model, developed by Ohio Citizen Action in the U.S., which use community mobilization and pressure to encourage local industries to reduce and prevent pollution, independent of legal and regulatory routes. The GNC model focuses on opening the lines of communication between industry and their neighbouring communities to create working relationship for positive change.
The Good Neighbours Project will evaluate how the GNC Model it can be adapted for community use in Ontario to seeking to address industrial pollution. A GNC Forum and online guide will share the results and lessons learned in the project with other communities.
