Good Neighbours Hamilton

In response to pollution concerns raised by residents in the city's north end, Environment Hamilton, a non-government organization created for Hamiltonians, by Hamiltonians, brought the Good Neighbour Campaign approach to Hamilton to open lines of communication between industry and community to reduce airbourne pollution.

Modeled after the approach used by Ohio Citizen Action (the organization that developed the GNC concept and utilized it to produce substantial beneficial changes in Ohio communities), the campaign chose to focus its efforts on the issues pertaining to ArcelorMittal-Dofasco, the city's largest steel producer.

This decision was based on community input and the concerns that were being raised by the facility's neighbouring residents. Upset with the company's failure to meet environmental regulations (specifically Regulation 419/05) and their excess production of particulate matter, rancid odours, and cancer causing chemicals, community members were looking for answers and positive change.

Since 2009 the Hamilton GNC has been working with residents to encourage AM-Dofasco to become a better neighbour to the community in which it is a part.
